Personifying the Renaissance period ideals of blending art and science, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a drawing, later to be known as the Vitruvian Man, based upon the notes of a famous Roman architect by the name of Vitruvius Pollio.  In his works, Vitruvius describes the ideal human proportions using geometry and collected these insights in Book III of his treatise De Architectura.  Vitruvius goes on further to describe the human figure as being the principal source of proportion in the Classical orders of architecture.  
 
Before Leonardo da Vinci, many artists had attempted and failed to depict the concept of the perfect human proportions.  Taking the concept futher, da Vinci envisaged the image of the Vitruvian Man, and the human body, to be a cosmografia del minor mundo, or, an analogy to the workings of the universe.
